COMMENTS: This species was further described by Schlegel and Müller, in Temminck, Verh. Nat. Gesch. Nederland. Overz. Bezitt., Zool., Mammalia, p. 131, 143 [1845], pl. 20, 22, 23 (1841]. Considered a subspecies of ursinus by Haltenorth (1958); but see Kirsch and Calaby (1977: 17) and Groves (1982 d).
