Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2. — General distribution: Cocos-Keeling Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Marshall Islands, Tonga and Samoa, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. In pairs, lives in coral reefs, 1 – 40 m depth. Marine.

Russell during 7 – 28 June 2015; a video of a specimen taken at Echuca Shoal, New Hanover, 15 – 34 m depth, St. KR 158, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
