Discussion Reevaluation of phylogenetic morphological characters used in previous studies (e. g., Costa, 1990, 1998) indicates an hypothesis similar to those formerly presented, in which Campellolebias is a strongly supported clade, and the sister group to Cynopoecilus (Fig. 1). Campellolebias intermedius, not available in previous phylogenetic studies of the genus, is hypothesized to be the sister group to a clade including C. chrysolineatus and C. brucei. Therefore, although C. intermedius and C. dorsimaculatus are known from neighboring regions of the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin, they are not closely related taxa. However, records for Campellolebias are still scarce, thus preventing biogeographic analyses.
