Institute of General and Experimental Biology of SB RAS – scientific institution based on the eastern part of Lake Baikal and providing complex biological studies in the fields of soil science, botany, zoology, microbiology, hydrobiology, parasitology, phytochemistry, and pharmacology. The main scientific directions are: 1) Structure, functioning, and evolution of terrestrial and water ecosystems, their biodiversity; 2) Problems of conservation and practical usage of biological resources. Within these directions three main problems are investigated: 1) Studies on genesis, structure and mechanisms of biodiversity functioning in Baikal region; 2) Spatial organization of soils in Baikal region, analysis of processes of soil degradation and desertification, elaboration of technologies for preserving and optimization of soils fertility; 3) Studies of heritage of Tibetan medicine and creating on that base new remedies with using modern biotechnological procedures.
