Description
To Promote, Facilitate and Coordinate Effective Environmental Management and Protection; and the Sustainable use of Guyana Natural Resources. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-Guyana, Guyana’s focal point of the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (UNCBD), is the main agency in Guyana entrusted with ensuring biodiversity conservation and with Guyana meeting its Multilateral Environmental Agreement obligations. Guyana is part of the Guiana Shield which is recognized internationally as an area of rich biological diversity. There are many projects and programmes that seek to address biological conservation in the Guiana Shield. However, an important component of projects and programmes is the availability and access to data and information to make informed strategies, plans, programmes and policies. The EPA recognizes this deficit and through the “Enhancing Guyana’s National Biodiversity Research Information System Database” project seeks to address it by the strengthening of the management of biodiversity data thereby improving its accessibility to governmental stakeholders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the third sector. Specifically, the project aims to achieve the following: • Strengthen national biodiversity information facilities; • Initiate mobilisation of biodiversity data among sector agencies; and • Allow sharing of biodiversity data to support decision making.Contacts
