Description
The State Nature Reserve “Malaya Sosva” was established in 1976. The historical roots of this protected area come from its predecessor Nature Reserve “Kondo-Sosvinksiy” established in 1929 with partially overlapping area, thus the history of protection and research of the Reserve’s area counts almost a century. The present area of the Reserve covers about 225 thousands hectares of its core area and about 160 thousand hectares of protected belt surrounding its borders. The area is covering the basin of the Malaya Sosva River, on the east side of the Northern Ural Mountains in Western Siberian Plain. More about history of the Reserve on its web-site: http://m-sosva.ru/?page_id=133. From the beginning of its history the Reserve was aimed to protect its local population of beaver (Castor fiber sbsp. pohlei) and sable (Martes zibellina) for sustainable hunting grounds. Since then, the biodiversity studies in the area included different groups of organisms, including series of long-term monitoring programs (“Chronicles of Nature”) since 1977. During the history of the Reserve, it employed many leading researchers in zoology, botany, entomology and other disciplines which left rich heritage of publications. For bibliography of publications refer to: http://m-sosva.ru/?page_id=180. The checklists of flora and fauna revealed in the Reserve include about 1400 taxa, but new groups of organisms continue to be studied and new diversity revealed. The Reserve holds several collections of specimens, including historical once made by the researchers in the beginning of organization of the Reserve (beginning of 20th century). The herbarium of Malaya Sosva includes about 10 thousand specimens (Vasina, 2015) of vascular plants, mosses, lichens and fungi.
