Description

The University maintains in the Department of Botany a Museum, a Herbarium and a Botanic Garden. The Department of Botany GC University Lahore Pakistan is one of the pioneer departments in the University, as it came into existence in 1902 and Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap worked as Head of Botany Department from 1912-1934. He was instrumental in establishing Museum and Herbarium in early 20th century. Plant specimens from various regions like China, Indonesia and Philippines were collected. The Museum was designated Prof. Kashyap Museum and Herbarium as Dr. Sultan Ahmed Herbarium in 1970s by Prof. A.R. Zafar the then Head of Botany Department. Dr. Sultan Ahmed was to be the most distinguished student of Prof. Kashyap. The Museum and Herbarium have very good collection safely maintained including specimens of early 19th Century. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Herbarium, the oldest in Lahore has been playing an essential role in teaching and research of Botany. Publications include i) A catalogue of Dr. Sultan Ahmad Herbarium ( March, 2006) ii) A Catalogue of Dr. Sultan Ahmad Herbarium (February,2012).The Department has a historic Botanic Garden in subcontinent spread on 7 acres named as Botanic Garden GCU, Lahore with a rich collection of plants.
