Description

Institute of Natural and Technical Sciences of Surgut State University was established in 2012 after merging the faculties of chemistry and biology. Currently the institute includes four departments: The department of Chemistry, Life Safety, Ecology and Biophysics, and Biology and Biotechnology. The department of Biology and Biotechnology dates back to 1996 when biology science in Surgut State University was established. The department of Ecology and Biophysics was opened in 1999 by Yuriy V. Titov. Among the researchers working in the departments  during their history are Viktor G. Alehin, Vladimir P. Starikov, Ludmila F. Shepeleva, Aleksandr V. Kuyarov, Petr N. Makarov, and others. The departments currently employ specialists in ornithology, mammology, botany, mycology, microbiology and others. Biodiversity studies are accomplished at three field stations of the university, as well as in expeditions, inventories of protected areas, and working in monitoring programs with oil and gas industries. The collections are fulfilled by the researchers as the results of research work and currently do not form independent unit of the university, including botanical collections of herbarium specimens, animal and bird skins and preparations, insects and invertebrate collections, and others.
