Prioksko-Terrasnyi Biosphere Reserve

Description

The Prioksko-Terrasnyi Biosphere Reserve is managed by the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Prioksko-Terrasnyi National Nature Biosphere Reserve” – a nature conservation research environmental educational institute. The Reserve was founded on June 19, 1945 and has been a part of UNESCO World Wide Network of Biosphere Reserves since 1978. The main objectives: - conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems, landscapes, rare and endangered species of plants and animals; - carrying out long-term comprehensive environmental studies; - preservation and study of unique meadow-steppe vegetation communities and floristic complex, known as “Oka flora”; - breeding, study and restitution of European bison in their former habitat; - environmental education. - scientific research The Science Department are carrying out research on five subjects: - Long Term Research of Ecosystems Changing (The Chronicle of Nature); - Inventory of rare species of animals, plants and mushrooms, as well as rare ecosystems in the buffer zone and in the cooperation zone of the biosphere reserve; - Scientific and methodological support of ecosystem management and environmental education activities; - Birds of biological communities of the Prioksko-Terrasny BR and adjacent areas; - The study of the spider fauna (Arachnida: Aranei) of the Prioksko-Terrasny BR. The research, a new for the Reserve, was initiated in 2014 (scientific supervisor R.R. Seyfulina). Environmental Monitoring The biota monitoring program includes observations of 12 long-term rows with the duration more then 20 years.
