Description
The Marimurtra Botanical Garden was founded in 1921 by the German industrialist Carl Faust Schmidt (1874-1952). Although dedicated to the business world, Faust retained a naturalistic hobby from a young age, which led him to buy land in Blanes starting in 1918. There, he began acclimatizing exotic plants from all continents. A year before his death, Faust founded the Carl Faust Private Foundation, which has since been responsible for managing the Marimurtra Botanical Garden. The Foundation was officially established in Blanes by notarial deed in 1951. Faust established a board of trustees, entrusting it with the maintenance of the Marimurtra Botanical Garden and the continuity of its scientific work. Reflecting his internationalist vision, the board included representatives of German, Spanish, Swiss, and English nationalities. One of the board members was the famous Catalan botanist Pius Font i Quer, a friend and main advisor of Faust. With almost a century of existence, the Marimurtra Botanical Garden is one of only two botanical gardens in Catalonia. In 1995, the Generalitat of Catalonia classified it as a Cultural Asset of National Interest, and in 2009 it received the Creu de Sant Jordi. It is part of the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens (AIMJB) and the Herbaria Ibero-Macaronesian Association (AHIM).Contacts
