ICO-Institut Català d'Ornitologia (Catalan Ornithological Institute)

GBIF publisher since
23 June 2016

Description

The Catalan Ornithological institute (ICO) is an NGO focused on research and monitoring of birds in Catalonia (NE Spain). One of its most successful projects consists on the maintenance and promotion of the use of the portal www.ornitho.cat, a website that allows citizens to store and share field observations of some groups of animals (mainly birds, but also other vertebrates and some groups of invertebrates). Data can be submitted as a complete list of observations during a period of time chosen by the user or as casual observations of one or several species. The aim of the project is to encourage participation of citizens in multiple forms of biodiversity surveys and provide updated information available for citizen scientists and policy makers. Currently (2016) ornitho.cat contains more than 3 million records and it is the largest biodiversity dataset for terrestrial fauna in Catalonia. A total of 98% records correspond to birds. Most information is uploaded to GBIF at a resolution of 1x1 km, but for some species of conservation concern data is shown at 10x10 km resolution.
