Description
The University of Madeira (UMa) is the only public university in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. 1989/90. UMa began teaching its first course, an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Sports. The University of Madeira has 224 teachers and researchers, 129 administrative staff and laboratory technicians, about 2900 undergraduate, master and doctoral students. At the University of Madeira there are the following Faculties and Higher Education Institutions: Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences, Higher Education Institution of Health and Higher Education Institution of Technology and Management. UMa has several centres and research groups that carry out scientific and cultural activities of international relief and, in some cases, with a strong impact in the region. The Region is a biodiversity hotspot, with the largest spot of Laurissilva, among the Macaronesian regions, a great diversity of native species and endemisms, as well as a great agrodiversity and marine resources, in one of the largest marine areas of the Portuguese territory. The Faculty of Life Sciences ensures the development of knowledge and research in the area of biodiversity and genetic resources. Several units and research groups are dedicated to the study of floristic and terrestrial or marine fauna diversity. In this context, the Center for Genetic Resources, ISOPlexis Germplasm Bank, is active in the area of bio-sustainability, promoting innovative programs and projects of great scientific interest aimed at the exploration, inventory, in situ and ex situ conservation and monitoring of biodiversity, with special focus on agrodiversity, soil microbiont, micro and macroalgae. These activities are supported by biological collections, whose associated data are managed by specific information and documentation system, and disseminated through connections with various international networks and programs, including AEGIS, Eurisco, and GRIN-Global. This knowledge is used in specialized services supporting education, research and policies decisions. This activity can be consulted, through the page (http://www3.uma.pt/isoplexis/) and its collection, through the page (http://isoplexis.uma.pt/gringlobal/search.aspx). UMa is an essential element for the deepening of the internationalization of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), in an increasingly knowledge-based society, seeking to contribute to a greater connection to the diaspora as well as to the construction of the Lusophony space and the education space, science and culture. UMa is a fundamental agent for the economic, social and cultural development of RAM.Contacts
