Description

Midt-Troms Museum is responsible for the museum operation in the nine municipalities in the central Troms region; Balsfjord, Bardu, Berg, Dyrøy, Lenvik, Målselv, Sørreisa, Torsken and Tranøy in the county Troms in Norway. The museum's main task is to collect, preserve and disseminate knowledge about the collective social memory, objects and museum artefacts in Central Troms. We aim to be a showcase of cultural history, natural history and development related to fishing and aquaculture, forestry, agriculture, petroleum, ore, mineral resources and defense history. The Natural History theme of Midt-Troms Museum is presented at Balsfjord Fjordmuseum og våtmarksenter (Balsfjord Fjord Museum and Wetland Centre) with information about sanctuaries, geology, large carnivores, birds and bird drawing, flora, spiders and insects. We have insect and spider collections and stuffed animals and birds, including wolves, bears, wolverines and lynx. We have also eagles, owls, gulls, waders, ducks and various passerines. In a small saltwater aquarium we display animals and algae that live in the shoreline.Balsfjord Fjord Museum and Wetlands Centre is located at Storsteinnes in Balsfjord municipality, with the Ramsar area Sørkjosleira as its nearest neighbor. The museum has a permanent exhibition about Balsfjord wetland system (Sørkjosleira and Kobbevågen). Our proximity to Sørkjosleira makes us a nice locality to observe bird life on the shoreline all year.
