Darwin Nature Biosphere Reserve

Description

The reserve is located in two regions - the Vologda region (Cherepovets district) and Yaroslavl region (Breitovsky district). The total area is 112.6 thousand ha, of which 67.1 thousand ha is land, 45.5 thousand ha is the water area of the Rybinsk reservoir (fresh water). Geographical coordinates 58° 30'– 58° 52' of northern latitude and 37° 30' – 38° 11' of eastern longitude. Territory of the reserve refers to biogeographical region of boreal coniferous forests. The whole Rybinsk reservoir is entirely within the forest zone. Flora of the reservoir is typical for the subzone of southern taiga. More than 80% of the reserve’s territory is occupied by sphagnum bogs and paludal forests. The reserve’s forests are coincided with the most drained areas. Pine forests are dominating in most cases they are paludal.
