Astrakhan Biosphere Reserve

GBIF publisher since
21 August 2019

Description

2The Astrakhan reserve is located in the lower Volga river delta and in the Northern Caspian Sea. The reserve territory includes three clusters: Damchiksky, Trekhizbinsky and Obzhorovsky. Each cluster represents a reserve area surrounded by a protection (buffer) zone. The reserve territory is situated in the Caspian depression with its elevation within -24 to -27 BS above the sea level. Total length of the river network is 689.8 km, including: 448 water streams, 4 channels, and 155 Ilmens (lakes). The sea water area of the Caspian Sea is 11,086 ha. The Astrakhan reserve was established in 1919, mostly for the conservation and recovery of waterfowl and semi-aquatic bird species. The designation as a biosphere reserve was made in 1984 on the basis of the Resolution of the Bureau of the "Man and the Biosphere" Programme of the International Coordinating Council. Starting from 1971 the reserve territory is also included in the wetlands "Delta of the Volga river" protected under the Convention on wetlands of international importance(Iran, Ramsar). In 1984 the reserve was assigned its designation as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO on the basis of the Resolution of the Bureau of the "Man and the Biosphere" Programme of the International Coordinating Council (certificate dated 15.02.85). The abundance of aquatic systems is contributing to the diversity of fish species. 9 species out of 61 are listed in the Endangered Species List (Red Data Book) of the Russian Federation, and 7 are listed as rare species of IUNC. 5 species of mammals of the reserve are also included in the IUNC list. 67 species out of 301 registered in the reserve are listed in the RF Red Data Book. Two out of three species of birds listed in IUNC are only a few hundred in number.
