Description

The Cea Niscemi is an ambientalist association that has two lines of action: 1) the volunteers work hard to protect the ecosystems and biodiversity in Sicily through local conservation projects and 2) spend a lot of time in the environmental education activities.1) With the collaboration of other Italian and foreign partners, the Cea Niscemi is committed to safeguarding areas belonging to the Natura2000 network. The volunteers monitor and collaborate with institutions to safeguard priority habitats and species. In particular, Cea Niscemi focuses its efforts on protecting the Special Protection Area (SPA) of "Gela Plain", an important migration route for transharian birds. In this area we collaborate with the farmers for a nature-friendly agriculture that respects birds and other animals. Since 2017, the CEA manages a protected area on behalf of the Stiftung Pro Artenvielfalt Foundation: Geloi Wetland. Despite its not so large size, Geloi’s area is an hotspot for biodiversity. The mosaic of farmed areas, pastures and fallows, represent what can be found in the entire Plains of Gela region. The CEA manages, implements and manages the Geloi Biochecklist.
