Museo di Zoologia (MZUR) - Sapienza University of Rome

GBIF publisher since
24 January 2020

Description

The Zoological Museum of Sapienza University of Rome (MZUR) is one of the most ancient Roman scientific museums. It hosts around 1 million specimens (both dry- and ethanol-preserved), ranging from Vertebrates to Invertebrates, coming from all the Biogeographical Regions. The collections are currently housed in three locations: the Museo Civico di Zoologia in Rome as well as the zoological and entomological sections of the Department of Biology and Biotechnology “Charles Darwin” of Sapienza University of Rome. A great diversity of vertebrate specimens is available, mainly birds, reptiles and mammals, not to mention the around 350000 arthropod specimens; the biggest and more relevant invertebrate collections are the Orthoptera, Coleoptera and Lepidoptera ones, including specimens mostly collected in the west-Palaearctic and Afrotropical regions. MZUR now works as a scientific base for international researchers dealing with different scientific problems, from global change ecology and pollination networks to insect systematics and taxonomy.
