Description
The Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute (TBRI) is a key governmental entity in Taiwan, entrusted with contributing to the national biodiversity conservation strategy founded on rigorous scientific evidence. Established in 1992 as the Taiwan Endemic Species Research Institute (TESRI), the institute has since evolved to become a leading organization in wildlife research and conservation. This development has been bolstered by its extensive experience in field surveys, systematic biology, habitat restoration, wildlife rescue, citizen science initiatives, interactive education, and a commitment to information management underscored by open data. The institute comprises divisions dedicated to wild fauna and flora research, ecosystem and natural resource management, and the mainstreaming of biodiversity knowledge. Additionally, it operates four field research stations, each emphasizing distinct ecological strata, spanning from low to high elevations, and encompassing Taiwan's coastal ecosystems. The institute also maintains a collection of wildlife specimens and an active herbarium, with digital archives of the latter made accessible to the global community online. In August 2023, due to governmental reformation, the institute transitioned from its former name, TESRI, to TBRI, signifying its expanded mandate and role within the domain of biodiversity conservation.Contacts
