Ilmen State Nature Reserve, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Science

GBIF publisher since
14 October 2019

Description

The Ilmensky reserve stretches along the eastern foothills of Southern Urals. In terms of its wildlife, the area belongs to the Taiga Forest Zone, with a predominance of pine-and-birch woods. This zone borders the higher country of dark conifers of the major local watershed divides to the west and the lower country of woods and steppes of the Trans-Uralian plain to the east. The astonishing floral diversity of the Ilmens must be due to various factors interacting. First, there is the area's peculiar geographical position, plus the rugged, broken terrain and the remarkable variety of rocks and soils. Forests cover 85 % of the Reserve. About 55 % of this coverage is pine (Pinus sylvestris), and about 40 % - birch. The remaining 5 % is mostly taken up by treeless landscape (meadows and steppes). A small percent of the total area is taken up by marshes. The Reserve's fauna is unusual, its diversity being determined by the combination of the typical taiga and typical steppe species.
