Description
The Department of Fisheries (DoF) under the Ministry of Agriculture was established in 1966. Its vision is “a nation that enjoys food security through sustainable fisheries and aquaculture production” and this is achieved through the provision of a framework for the promotion of sustainable Capture Fisheries and Aquaculture to achieve food security, poverty alleviation and economic growth. One of the objectives of the National Environmental Policy (2000) for fisheries is, “to manage fish resources for sustainable utilization, reduction and conservation of aquatic biodiversity”. To achieve this objective for capture fisheries, harvesting should be based on established sustainable yields of different species/stocks and opportunities to expand existing and/or develop new aquatic resources. The Department of Fisheries (DoF) relies heavily on scientific information for the development of protocols and plans with which to manage Malawi’s fisheries. The Research Division of the department generates occurrence and sampling data that can be shared through GBIF. Specifically, the Fisheries Research Unit at Monkey Bay and Senga Bay, generates data on the biology, life history, species composition and distribution of the target species.Contacts
