State natural reserve "Kurilskiy" is the responsibility of the Federal state budget institution "State natural reserve "Kurilskiy". It is an environmental, research, environmental and educational institution of Federal importance. The reserve was founded in 1984. The main objectives of the reserve are to preserve and study the natural course of natural processes and phenomena, the genetic Fund of flora and fauna, individual species and communities of plants and animals, typical and unique ecological systems of the southern Kuril Islands. The research Department conducts research in the following areas: - Long Term Research of Ecosystems Changing (The Chronicle of Nature); - Study of geosystems of the Kurilskiy reserve by space images of different spectral ranges; - Inventory of animals and plants Kurilskiy reserve, reserve "Small Kuriles" and adjacent territories; - Study of reproductive stability of populations of rare bird species of the Kurilskiy reserve and adjacent territories; - Study of biology, population status and development of methods for protection and restoration of rare plants. Environmental Monitoring. The biota monitoring program includes observations of 10 long-term rows with the duration more then 10 years.
