Description
The Museum Herbarium of Sapienza University of Rome safekeeps about a million specimens of dried plants. It is marked by the international code "RO" (Index Herbariorum). This remarkable heritage is the result of a great effort of numerous scholars and collectors from the eighteenth century to the present day. The Herbarium records plant biodiversity, being an important reference for scientific research in multiple areas of Botany, on both a national and an international scale. Multimedia cataloging of data recorded on the label (title/herbarium, plant identification, location and date of collection, geocode, collector, annotations) makes the huge amount of information hidden in the Herbarium freely available to everybody. Biodiversity-related information is shared on databases and virtual networks of herbaria participating in global cataloging, to underpin science, conservation and sustainable development and understand global patterns of plant diversity.Contacts
