Working Group International Waterbird and Wetland Research (WIWO) - The Netherlands

GBIF publisher since
26 October 2015

Description

The Working Group International Waterbird and Wetland Research (WIWO) was established in 1983 in The Netherlands. The aim of this organisation is to stimulate, initiate and carry out scientific research on waterfowl and wetlands, especially for conservation purposes. For more than 30 years, field studies were organised in Europe, Africa and Asia, with a focus on countries along the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean itineraries. Over 80 projects were established with the results published in reports and scientific articles. Data concern species checklists, bird counts, ringing data as well as biometric data. The working group has created a well-defined and accessible intermediary between funding organisations and governmental bodies on the one hand, and volunteer ornithologists interested in studying water birds in countries with little data on the other.
