Description
The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is a sub-division within the Division Forest & Botanical Research of Directorate of Forestry, resorting under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.The mission of the NBRI is to promote the understanding, conservation and sustainable utilisation of the Namibian flora for the benefit of all.
To achieve this mission, the NBRI consists of the following sections: • Bio-Informatics: responsible for digitising and dispersing data to an array of users. • Economic Botany: responsible for the implementation of effective management systems (local, national and international) to ensure the development and sustainable utilisation of Namibian plant products. • M.A.N. Müller Reference Library: repository for botanical information on Namibian flora and related subjects. • National Botanic Garden of Namibia (NBGN): responsible for environmental education, protection and promotion of the sustainable utilisation of the Namibian flora as well as serving as recreational nature facility for Namibians and visitors alike. • The National Herbarium of Namibia (WIND): responsible for inventory of Namibian flora, preservation of herbarium collection, specimen database management. • The National Plant Genetic Resources Centre (NPGRC): promotes in situ and ex situ conservation and use of Namibian plant genetic resources (crops, crop wild relatives, wild and other introduced useful plants). • Threatened Plants Programme: responsible for long-term monitoring of species of conservation concern as well as reviewing conservation status of species of conservation concern.
