Wadi ez-Zouhour

GBIF publisher since
12 August 2019

Description

Wadi ez-Zouhour (Valley of Flowers) was created in 2006 by Mohammad-Zahed Ahmad Taleb, current president of the association. It is based in Qemmamin, in Danniye, Lebanon. The first objective of the association was to resolve the educational issue that the village was facing. There was no school and Qemmamin is geographically isolated. This constituted an important obstacle for the children to access education. The main achievement of the association was the creation of a school in Qemmamin. The project was funded by Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the European Union. Although oriented into social aspects, the association has always been willing to implement environmental projects to protect their valleys from uncontrolled urbanization and quarries and to raise environmental awareness, especially for children. Even the name of the association refers to the biological diversity of the valleys. The botanical project “Mobilizing plant species occurrence and sampling-event data from North Lebanon”, set up by Hicham El Zein and co-funded by The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and GBIF, constitutes the first scientific study for the association. Wadi ez-Zouhour is also the first Lebanese association/institution to join GBIF in 2019. The association believes in the importance of free accessible scientific data on biodiversity and is therefore totally willing to share the botanical data collected in the valleys during this first project.
