Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve

GBIF publisher since
25 September 2020

Description

Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve is located in the northwest of European Russia and includes over 550 islands and three mainland territories along the White Sea and the Barents Sea. It was established on September 7, 1932 to protect the common eider. The nature reserve is situated in five administrative districts (Pechengskii, Kol'skii, Lovozerskii, Terskii, Kandalakshskii) of Murmansk Region and Louhskii district of the Republic of Karelia. Most of its territories are marine archipelagos with adjacent water areas. Islands are covered by north taiga or tundra vegetation with famous bird colonies on the shores. In 1975, the Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea, where most of the nature reserve’s archipelagos are located, was included in the list of Wetlands of International Importance as a habitat for water birds. Since its establishment the nature reserve was under intensive scientific research in ornithology, field botany, hydrobiology, etc. Over 10,000 biological species have been identified in the nature reserve, including approximately 1100 plant species, over 5000 invertebrates, 397 vertebrates.
