Description

Research field of Department of Biosystematics (Institute of Life Sciences and Technology, Daugavpils University) includes fundamental and applied researches in the spheres of coleopterology, biosystematics, behaviour ecology, parasitology, nanobiotechnologies, molecular biology and genetics, aquaculture, botany etc. In the sphere of biological diversity Daugavpils University maintains and supplements internationally significant herbarium collection (70 000 herbarium sheets), which is registered in the international index of herbariums Index Herbariorum (acronym DAU). At DU Centre of Coleopterological Researches the biggest beetles' collection in the Baltic States (acronym: DUBC), in which more than 200 000 specimens from more than 12 000 species are deposited, is kept. DU scientists participate in elaboration of programmes for monitoring of biological diversity, nature protection plans for especially protected nature territories, species and habitats.
