Description
The Nuratau Nature Reserve (Djizak province, Uzbekistan) was established in 1975 for protection of wildlife and ecosystems of the Nuratau mountain ridge, especially Severtsov’s argali (Ovis ammon severtzovi) and relic walnut forests. It is a strictly protected area of Category I IUCN. The nature reserve is situated in central part of the Nuratau ridge, its total area is 177.52 km2, and altitudes ranging from 530 to 2169 m a.s.l. Any forms of landuse and economic activity are prohibited in the territory of the nature reserve, except of monitoring, research and education. The flora of the Nuratau Nature Reserve includes 835 species of vascular plants (33 of them are red-listed at the national level) and 220 species of algae. Mycobiota is represented with 343 species and forms of fungi. Fauna includes 852 species of invertebrates (816 species of insects) and 260 species of vertebrate animals (fishes - 1, amphibians – 3, reptiles – 21, Birds – 200, mammals - 35). The nature reserve is managed by the State Committee for Forestry. The nature reserve has an office, a small field research station and full time staff (rangers, researchers, administrative and technical personnel).Contacts
