Global Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS)

Description

The Global Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS) promotes and conducts interdisciplinary research to generate credible, salient and legitimate knowledge that catalyzes a transformative change in the developmental policies and practices in Nepal and elsewhere. GIIS has been also implementing several programmes to increases the understanding on the linkages between ecosystems and humans. It does so by exploring and quantifying ecosystem services provisioned by nature, and by measuring the impacts of human actions on biodiversity. Here, research fellows have been working on changes in forests and rangelands; taxonomy, ecology and ethnobiology of fungi, lichens, and wildlife. Among the 16 research fellows actively working for this organization, three of them are contributing as Lead Authors (Dr. Uttam Babu Shrestha, Dr. Bharat Babu Shrestha ) and Fellow scientist (Dr. Shiva Devkota) for The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) - which means knowledge on species diversity, distribution, uses, and taxonomic treatment is also reflecting on IPBES's Global Assessment and Sustainable Use of Wild Species Assessment. Being associated with the esteemed and valued GBIF as a data publisher will be a key milestone for the GIIS to bring more species details for the wider audiences.
