Darder Natural History Museum of Banyoles

Description

Darder Museum of Banyoles was inaugurated on 22 October 1916. Originally, the specimens of the Museum came from the donation of the natural history collections of Francesc Darder Llimona to the town of Banyoles. The collection includes original pieces of dissected animals from around the world, pieces of anthropology, skulls, fetus, human skins, and educational materials related to the natural sciences. The museum's collection also grew up with donations of other people who offered some of their natural sciences collections or objects to the Museum. Nowadays, the Museum collection reaches approximately to 20,000 objects or specimens. Also, it includes different general type collections: botanical, fossils, minerals, insects, mollusks, skeletons and dissected animals. Museum center: Darder Museum is one of the oldest in the surrounding Girona region. Opened in 1916, underwent few changes until its complete renovation, which began in 2003. In 2007 opens its doors again, incorporating a part dedicated to explaining the phenomenon of the hydrological basin of Lake Banyoles. The building which houses the Museum Darder was built in the late nineteenth century, but now retains only three walls of that old municipal building, where there was the Post Office and the Municipal School. Museum Science Area: This comprises the Collections departments and the Documentation Centre, and all the activities undertaken by them, that is, conservation, description and study of the natural and documentary heritage of their resources. In fact, everything that goes on at the Museum would be pointless were it not for its fundamental, primary purpose which is to safeguard and preserve that heritage. The collections are kept in store and are preserved and studied by biologists and geologists who document them (taking inventory, cataloging, computerizing, and publishing databases) and make them available for the scientific community. The Documentation Centre places the information resources it administers at the disposal of the Museum experts and the public.
