Description
Cayes Botanical Garden is a NGO that is located in the southwestern city of Les Cayes, the Cayes Botanical garden offers the first curated public garden that focus on plant conservation in Haiti. Established in 2003, Their mission is to connect visitors with nature through scientific research, education and horticulture. The Garden works all over Haiti and leads conservation and research in Haiti. A MOU between ANAP ( National Agency for Protected Area) and JBC was signed and JBC has to do research in Protected areas in Haiti.Haiti has more than 210 endemic tree species, in 2017 with expertise of BGCI, poorly studied in Haiti. We don’t have a national red list, we don’t have a database either. To solve these problems the garden wants to work on several projects and the most important are:● Haiti zero plant extinction, the goal of this project is to assess all the endemic trees and shrubs in Haiti, to collect seeds, develop reproduction protocols and reproduce them and do population reinforcement and raising awareness to reduce the threats on these species.● Inaturalist project, which has been created to make the Haitian flora available on a database online.● The red list for Haiti, most of the species of Haiti are being critically extinct and are not evaluated. Haiti needs to have a red list in order to work on the species evaluation and do a better species conservation.Contacts
