Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is responsible for over 19 million physical holdings of insects, plants, fungi, bacteria, nematodes as well as plant and animal reproductive material. These include: a)The Canadian National Collection (CNC) of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes in Ottawa, Ontario, which is the largest in Canada with more than 17 million specimens. b)The National Collection of Vascular Plants Herbarium (DAO - historic abbreviation of the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa) in Ottawa, Ontario, with more than 1.7 million specimens. It is the largest plant collection in Canada.c)The National Mycology Herbarium (DAOM - historic abbreviation of the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, Mycology) in Ottawa, Ontario, with more than 350,000 specimens. It is the largest collection of plant pathogens in Canada.d)The Canadian Animal Genetic Resource (CAGR) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is a joint initiative with the University of Saskatchewan which ensures the genetic diversity of Canadian livestock and poultry, supports environmentally friendly production, and maintains food security. There are approximately 200,000 accessions (defined as collection holdings of live material such as seeds, reproductive tissue and microbial isolates). e)The Plant Gene Resources of Canada (PGRC) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with more than 115,000 accessions serves as the national repository of living germplasm for crops, selected wild relatives and native plant species of significance to Canada. f)The Canadian Collection of Fungal Cultures (CCFC) in Ottawa, Ontario, with more than 17,000 living strains. It is the main national collection for fungal genetic resources for research, breeding programs, and industry. g)The Canadian Plant Virus Collection (CPCV), in Summerland, BC, which includes 800 virus isolates.Contacts
