The GBIF Secretariat is seeking to recruit a graduate student based in our host city, Copenhagen, for a part-time position aimed at helping to expand an advanced data citation system and improve our tracking of policy uses of biodiversity data.

To be competitive, candidates should have an interest in the use of open data in policy reports and documents and familiarity with reference management tools. A background or expertise in science and biodiversity-related fields would be helpful but not absolutely necessary. Work will take place in the offices of the GBIF Secretariat on the University of Copenhagen’s Nørre Campus.

If your qualifications and interests match our needs, and you’re able to start working this fall, we look forward to hearing from you.

Responsibilities

As part of the communications team, you will help us review and classify a growing body of policy reports, white papers, and other documents that apply and cite the use of open data from the GBIF network. Your efforts will build on and complement our current system to track data use through citation, which currently logs nearly five peer-reviewed journal articles that make use of GBIF mediated-data every day.

Qualifications

  • Experience with reference management tools (e.g. Mendeley or Zotero)
  • Experience with or interest in reviewing scientific policy publications
  • Interest in or understanding of the use of open data in policy-relevant settings, across local, national or global scales
  • Interest or experience around biodiversity, data management and related international policies and processes will be an advantage
  • Ability to review, assess and classify published research quickly and accurately
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

Contract and remuneration

This position is planned to run during the current academic year (September 2023-May 2024) The workload is flexible and can be adjusted to fit the incumbent’s course load and other commitments, with a rolling average of 5-10 hours per week. Upon substantial completion of the review and classification of policy documents, the incumbent may be asked to contribute to other mutually agreed activities.

The hourly wage will align with the student hourly-rate payscale at the University of Copenhagen.

Application procedure and deadline

If you are interested in applying for this position, please email the following materials to Susanne Sheldon, HR Manager, via studentjob-2023@gbif.org:
