As part of our continuous mission to capacity development in the region, GBIF Asia Regional Support Team is organising a virtual data use workshop to share knowledge of using GBIF data infrastructure. This course is designed for individuals who work as researchers or technicians in biodiversity research or policy institutions. The instruction provided is particularly useful for those who have a need or desire to use GBIF-mediated data in their own research or analyses.

Schedule

The workshop has three sections of activities organised into two days:

  • 15 July: Section I - Darwin Core Standard and GBIF.org and Section II - Data quality

  • 16 July: Section III - Data processing and pipelines (API, automation, R)

Sessions will be held each day beginning at 06:00 UTC and will last approximately 3 hours with a 15 minute break.

Participants who attend both sessions will receive a certificate of attendance.

Participants in the workshop should possess the following skills and knowledge:

  1. Basic skills in computer and internet use, and in the use of spreadsheets.
  2. Basic understanding of computer-based geographical and statistical analysis tools e.g. GIS and R, and may have already run analyses using these tools.
  3. Basic knowledge about geography and biodiversity informatics: geography and mapping concepts, basic taxonomy, and nomenclature rules.
  4. A good command of English. While efforts are made to provide materials in other languages, instruction/videos will be in English.

Due to limited training resources, we have 20 seats available for this workshop. If we received more registrations, we will prioritise:

  • Instructors who have running curricula ready to incorporate GBIF data use materials;
  • Individuals who have published or involved in publishing data through GBIF, thus equipped essential knowledge of the GBIF data chain;
  • Individuals who can commit time to disseminate the knowledge learned in the workshop with partners and collaborators in your project by adapting the biodiversity data use training materials to specific contexts and languages while maintaining their instructional value.
