POSTPONED: In light of current developments in the West Asia region, we have made the decision to postpone this webinar. We encourage you to register for the Virtual Data Mobilization Workshop for West Asia 2026 event, which is still scheduled to proceed at this stage. We apologize for any inconvenience.

This webinar will introduce GBIF, including its governance structure, the benefits of participation and opportunities to engage in the global biodiversity data network. It is primarily intended for governments and organizations in the West Asia region that collect, manage and/or use biodiversity data. The webinar will also include an overview of the upcoming online regional workshop event, scheduled for 25 and 28 May and 1 and 4 June 2026.

Who should join this webinar?

The event is intended for government and organizational representatives from Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Context

The 2019 IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services noted that openly accessible biodiversity data from the West Asia region is currently underrepresented. Sharing species occurrence data through GBIF is a pathway to enable the region to leverage a mature data infrastructure to increase biodiversity data flows and support more robust biodiversity science and monitoring.
