The aim of this virtual summit is to bring Asian stakeholders together to learn about the activities of GBIF, and to address the need for improved access to data on the rich biodiversity of the region. The summit will discuss some of the issues raised in the recently published 20-year review of GBIF, which highlights the need to expand participation in Asia.

The two-hour webinar will highlight the opportunities provided by the Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia (BIFA) programme, led by GBIF and funded by the Ministry of Environment, Government of Japan. BIFA aims to support mobilization of standardized biodiversity data through GBIF.org, expand the GBIF network in the region and add to the ability of Asian researchers and decision-makers to access data required for the management of the region’s biodiversity.

In this webinar, we will:

  • Introduce GBIF and BIFA
  • Highlight the activities and plans of the nodes representing the Asian countries and organizations currently participating in GBIF
  • Learn about the positive impact of BIFA on mobilizing biodiversity data and broadening the community of practice in the region, through the success stories and lessons learned of previous project holders
  • Convene a panel to discuss approaches to addressing issues raised by the 20-year review of GBIF, including better representation of Asian governments in the GBIF membership, and options for a regional office in Asia
  • Respond to your questions and provide information on how to stay engaged with GBIF and BIFA in the future

Please note that 21-24 July GBIF hosts a data mobilization workshop.
