COP-16 Side Event: Establishing collaborations on science, technology and capacity building for biodiversity data between the GBIF network and CBD regional support centres

This GBIF-hosted side event will explore regional differences to data access and utilization under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and explore how the regional networks of GBIF can enable centres to meet their needs and objectives against new reporting requirements that demand improved systems for gathering and repackaging biodiversity data.

The series of presentations and discussions comprising the session will focus on:

  • Establishing a framework for collaboration between GBIF network and regional support centres for and Sustainable scaling e-up of national biodiversity facilities to more effectively deliver and influence national and regional objectives more effectively capacity-building and development and technical and scientific cooperation
  • Facilitating access to and exchange of relevant technical and scientific data, information and knowledge. Innovation and technical readiness
    -To enhance local, national, subregional, regional and international capacities in relation to science, technology and innovation by means of human resource and institutional capacity-building and development

Expected outcomes

  • Highlight the role that regional support centres will play in facilitating access to and use of biodiversity data and identify key regional needs that require urgent support
  • Demonstrate how GBIF’s data infrastructure and network, data standards and enriched data models and web and cloud-based services can support the core functions of regional and subregional support centres
  • Catalyse the development of new partnerships, including identification of potential funding sources, to support programmes that facilitate access to, and utilization of available scientific knowledge, information and data
