The fauna of water fleas (Crustacea: Cladocera) is relatively well investigated in different regions of Palaearctic, but the cladocerans of Republic of Tyva (Russian Federation) are still inadequately studied. Our database represent results of the survey of the cladocerans in this region performed during almost 30 years (1993-2022). Most of the locations are situated in mountains. A total of 903 sites were investigated. This effort yielded the collection of 3698 specimens belonging to 77 species from 35 genera.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The database contains information on samples collected in different permanent water bodies of different depths, as well as in temporary waters of Republic of Tyva. Such water bodies are located at different altitudes and have different salinity levels. Main river basins of Republic of Tyva are sampled. Both planktonic and benthic-phytophylous cladocerans are represented.Sampling
All samples were collected by plankton nets and/or dip nets from the shore, and from a boat in cases of a large lakes and water reservoirs. For species identification, collected samples were transported to the laboratory at Tuvinian Institute for the Exploration of Natural Resources of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, then particular samples were re-examined at the laboratory of aquatic ecology and biological invasions of A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Ecology RAS.Quality Control
Identification of the species was carried out mainly using last monographs formed with participation of A.A. Kotov (Kotov et al., 2010; Korovchinsky et al., 2021). Juvenile specimens were identified to the genus level and not included to this database. In course of our studies on the cladocerans of Tyva, several papers were published in international journals (Kotov, 1999; Kirova, 2021; Sinev et al., 2021; Kirova and Oydup, 2022), and several new records for Russia were reported. Scientific names were further validated using the GBIF species matching tool. We cordially thank Artem Y. Sinev and Nikolai M. Korovchinsky for their help in the identification of taxonomically difficult groups of the Cladocera.Method steps
- The data has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3698 records belonging to 77 species from 903 locations.
