The province of Limburg lies in the southeast of the Netherlands. Its capital is Maastricht. Over 1,115,000 people live on an area that covers 2,209 square kilometres. The province is dominated by sandy soil landscapes. Its main river, the Maas, flows from south to north through the length of the province. The south of Limburg is unusually hilly by Dutch standards.
