This dataset is part of Edaphobase.
Edaphobase is a data warehouse that collects information from literature, museum collections and research data about the distribution and ecology of soil organisms (earthworms, potworms, nematodes, springtails, proturans, diplurans, moss/beetle mites, gamasina mites, centipedes, millipedes, woodlice, soil fungi and soil prokaryotes).

The reference work presents the results of studies on the fauna of xerophilic/xerothermic grasslands and dry heathland in Land Saxony-Anhalt during the years 1994 to 1998. The data from 49 study areas throughout the province was evaluated, consisting of dry and semi-dry grassland, cliff sites and dry heathland Year-round pitfall catches were supplemented by Barber traps and earth sieving. The aim of the study was to compile an inventory of the fauna and, building on this, a clarification of the question as to whether characteristic groupings of species or habitat preference of diverse invertebrate taxa could be identified. Results for the following taxa were presented: Wood Lice (Isopoda), Spiders (True Spiders) (Arachnida: Araneae), Harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones), Millipedes (Myriapoda: Diplopoda), Centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda), Springtails (Collembola), Cockroaches (Blattoptera), Earwigs (Dermaptera), Crickets and Grasshoppers (Ensifera et Caelifera), Cicadas (Cicadina), Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae),Rove Beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), other Beetle families (Coleoptera), some Fly families (Diptera), Amphibians (Amphibia), Reptiles (Reptilia) and Mammals (Mammalia). A total of 1.759 species were recorded which is approx. 28% of the known species in these taxa for Land Saxony-Anhalt. 58 new species were recorded of which are new for the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition 26 important species were recorded for the first time for 50 years in Saxony-Anhalt. Particularly worth mentioning are 4 new Fly species for science - Drapetis hirsuticercis spec. nov. is described for the first time in the study. Characteristic species groupings or respectively habitat preference are presented for Grasshoppers, Cicadas, Ground and Rove Beetles; characteristic species are named for other taxa. The data are evaluated and discussed from a professional nature protection viewpoint. The high importance of Xerotherm biotopes for the conservation of regional variety of species is emphasised. The description and evaluation of the species inventory will provide an important basis for countryside planning and nature protection.
