Point Count Data for TIDE's Private Land (Starcher), Belize 2009-2012

Description

Point count data collected at one of TIDE's private land, Starcher, in southern Belize. Data was collected from January 2009 to December 2012.

Purpose

The dataset was developed based on point count data collected by the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment. The dataset includes observational data of both resident and migrant species. Having data on birds in Belize will allow information to be generated on diversity, abundance, etc.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Data was collected at Starcher, one of TIDE's private lands, from January 2009 to December 2012.

Sampling

The data collected used the point count method. Point counts were conducted at 200 m intervals along a 1 km transect. At each interval/point count, the recorder and observer recorded all bird species that were seen and/or heard within a 10 minute time frame. The number of individuals of that species was also recorded along with other data such as weather conditions, start time, end time and the date.

Quality Control

The surveys were conducted by field staff who possess experience in identifying birds in the field. Identification guides were also used as references to properly the birds seen.

Method steps

  1. The dataset was collected using the most commonly used point count methodology.

Taxonomic Coverages

Geographic Coverages

The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment manages 20,488 acres of private lands in the southern part of Belize. All private lands are located within the Maya Mountain Marine Corridor. This particular private land, Starcher, is comprised of lowland broadleaf forest and riparian forest.
