EDP Foz-Tua: Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (point counts) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2013-16]. EDP - Energias de Portugal. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/e25k29 accessed via GBIF.org on 2023-03-28.

Description

The dataset contains records of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (Aves) and other riparian birds collected in the Tinhela river (Tua sub-basin) and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2012-17) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the spring of 2013, and in the and winter and spring of 2014-2016, during field visits to six count points located in the riverbed of the Tinhela river, both in the area affected by the dam, near the mouth, and upstream. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes. These point counts aimed to replace the linear transects of the regular program for this species, whenever these could not be performed due to security or logistic reasons. Therefore, they were set in the initial point of the transect they replaced. A total of 40 observations of four species (including the Dipper) were recorded.

Purpose

This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The data were collected in the riverbeds of the Tinhela river (river Tua sub-basin) (Northeast Portugal), up to 10 km from the mouth, in the municipality of Murça.

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for the Dipper and other riparian birds along the Tinhela valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (the mouth) and upstream. A total of six count points was established along the river Tinhela, in the starting point of a corresponding linear transect. All points were sampled once in winter and 1-2 times in the reproductive period (spring), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each sampling point was surveyed for 30 minutes. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Quality Control

All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
