A grid-based database on vascular plant distribution in Udomlya District of Tver Oblast, Russia

Description

A dataset contains more then 31,000 unique occurrences of 786 vascular plant species from Udomlya district of Tver Oblast (Russia). They are based on field studies, performed on basis of the “Lake Moldino” biological station of Moscow High School # 1543 in 2007–2016 by numerous teachers and students (principal investigators Liudmila A. Abramova and Polina A. Volkova). Georeferences are based on 105 squares 5 km × 5 km (occurrences are placed in the grid square centroids). Several squares were investigated twice; results of both surveys are given separately, so some records are duplicated (if a species was recorded during both surveys of one square). The analysis of the dataset has been published by Volkova et al. (2016; 2018).

Sampling Description

Study Extent

In 2007–2016, grid mapping of vascular plant flora of Udomlya district (Tver Oblast, Russia) was performed. This project used a grid with 105 squares (25 square km each), of which 99 were surveyed.

Sampling

Study of flora begins with the preparation of routes using satellite images. They should link areas of potential interest. Plants that are difficult to identify in field are collected in herbarium and deposited in MW. Track is permanently controlled by GPS.

Quality Control

During the field trip we are recording species in printed spreadsheets with most widely distributed species. This helps us to record common species without occasional misses.

Method steps

  1. Common practice of regular floristic grid recording, described in details in Volkova et al. (2016).

Taxonomic Coverages

Vascular plants. 100% records are identified at species level.
  1. Tracheophyta
    rank: phylum

Geographic Coverages

Udomlya District of Tver Oblast (Russia) in its administrative borders. The area is briefly described in Volkova et al. (2016).
