The Woodland Trust (2019). Big Bluebell Watch 2018. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/zyc4ec accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-15.Description
Sightings of Hyacinthoides non-scripta, H. hispanica or an unspecified Hyacinthoides sp. from any habitat across the UK. A record indicates presence and can be a single flower or a patch of flowers. The date refers to the date that the record was entered, NOT the date it was seen.
Purpose
Sampling Description
Quality Control
Records have not been verified, but the website had an ID guide to help distinguish between Hyacinthoides non-scripta and H. hispanica. It is assumed that the date they entered the record is close to the date they saw it. As the time period that the app was live was limited, the records should reflect the presence of that species during the 2017 season. The dataset is not intended to contain accurate phenological records.Method steps
- Bluebell records submitted by citizens via the Woodland Trust website (mobile friendly) during spring 2018. People were asked to record the location of bluebells that they saw whilst out and about. They were asked to identify whether it was Hyacinthoides non-scripta or H. hispanica, but if they were unsure could choose 'don't know'. The reason for recording only the date that was entered was to not request more details from the recorder than necessary.
Additional info
If use of this dataset forms part of a large funding bid, please speak to us in advance. Data sharing statement that participants were made aware of before submitting data: If you supply the Woodland Trust with scientific or environmental records e.g. as part of a citizen science or volunteer project, they will be carefully stored by us and/or our project partners. Such records may include, for example, species information, location, dates and species photographs. Scientific data sharing helps to further research, education and our national understanding of biodiversity and conservation issues. Hence anonymised scientific data may be shared with project partners and third parties such as the National Biodiversity Network, academic researchers and students. In some circumstances such scientific data may be sold, but the income will be directly used to support the running cost of these data-gathering projects. By submitting your scientific or environmental records you are indicating agreement with our approach.Taxonomic Coverages
