Monitoring of microphytobenthos abundance and community composition has been carried out with an irregular frequency, from monthly to seasonal, in the Gulf of Trieste, from 2/1999 to 06/2005.Sampling Description

Monthly sampling from 02/1999 to 03/2002; seasonal sampling from 05/2002 to 06/2005.Sampling
KC Haps bottom corer, 13 cm internal diameter. The sampled layer consists of the upper 5 mm of the sediment which has been homogenized.Method steps
- Samples were fixed with Ca(HCO3)2-buffered formaldehyde (0.8% final concentration) and cell abundance and species composition of microphytobenthos were estimated according to Utermöhl’s method (1958), using an inverted microscope equipped with phase contrast, at 200-320-400x final magnifications.
