This dataset describes primary biodiversity data pertaining to pelagic diversity from the Bay of Toliara, Madagascar. The data is assembled in the framework of a specialized training program for students from Madagascar and its surrounding region (Pole de Formation Spécialisee, Institut Halieutique et des Sciences de la Mer). Additional data will be added along the years. Pelagic samples are taken in the Bay of Toliara using two ships and Plankton nets. The georeferencing is done using a GPS onboard ships, and samples are taken inside the lagoon (in two seperate locations); as well as on the outer fringe of the coral reef. The taxonomic determination are done by the students using a local field guide, under the supervision of their accompanying professor. Students enter data in Darwincore spreadsheet templates as provided by GBIF.Purpose
This data has been collected by Master-level students, under the supervision of their professor. Identifications are not specialist grade.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
This study will include occurrence of organisms recorded in the framework of the Pelagic Biodiversity course of the Pôle de Formation Spécialisée.Sampling
Sampling was carried out using plakton nets of two sizes, deployed by students onboard small vessels naviugating in the Bay of Toliara, inside and outside the lagoon.Quality Control
Sampling, Identification and Georeferencing were performed by the students, under the supervision of Prof Bruno Danis, Université Libre de Bruxelles. Scientific Names were matched against the content of the World Register of Marine Species using the dedicated Taxon Match tool.Method steps
- each data object corresponds to an individual observed in the field and collected using plankton nets. as mentionned in the data quality control field, sampling, identification and georeferencing were performed by the students, under the supervision of Prof Bruno Danis, Université Libre de Bruxelles
Taxonomic Coverages
All taxa captured using small plancton nets are entered in the dataset, including zoo-, phyto- plankton. Names were matched using the World Register of Marine Species Taxon Match Tool (http://marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=match).

Biotacommon name: Pelagic organisms rank: domain
Geographic Coverages
Samples were taken in the Bay of Toliara (Madagascar), in the Mozambique Channel.
