Description

Effective biodiversity management, policymaking and decision-making depend on the existence of reliable data on the conservation situation of species and their habitats. The IUCN/SSC Cuban Plant Specialist Group (CubanPSG) has been producing ed list assessments and compiling records of native plants of Cuba since 1998. This resource presents an updated checklist of Cuban native plants assessed, with relevant conservation information like IUCN category, conservation assessment rationale and protected areas where occur. Also local vernacular names and status as Cuban endemic are provided as apply.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Archipielago of Cuba, for the last 20 years

Sampling

CubanPSG performed during last two decades species conservation assessments on native plants of Cuba. For that purpose had been used information about its habitat and population, threats and trend, based on field observations and data from field prospections, also herbaria records, publications and local expert consultation. We also gathering as information as possible in order to inform management. The checklist is a comprehensive compilation of species addressed for this purpose.

Method steps

  1. Gathering information about state of species habitat and population, threats and trend, based on field observations and data from field prospections, also herbaria records, publications and local expert consultation. Conservation assessment using IUCN categories and criteria 3.1. Input relevant information about the taxon and the conservation assessment in a database. Produce a checklist in a similar way to red list, and addition of common names, presence in protected areas registered, as well as conservation assessment rationale.
