The data was collected as part of a re-surveying effort of the Local Wildlife Sites in the county of Herefordshire funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund's Green Recovery Challenge Fund. https://www.herefordshirewt.org/localwildlifesites
Purpose
There are 749 LWSs in Herefordshire, many of which have not been re-surveyed since their initial selection in 1990. This re-surveying effort is to gather information on their current condition.
Sampling Description
Quality Control
Data recorded by qualified project officer & trainees with a specialism in grassland plant identification. Moderate or greater confidence in quality across the full range of species recorded.Method steps
- Methods are informed by Herefordshire LWS Criteria 2020, Hereordshire LWS guidelines 2022, Herefordshire Green Book and Herefordshire LWS Protocols & Processes documentation. All site surveys are primarily botanical, although other incidental species data was recorded. For grassland sites, full species lists were taken and species frequency was recorded using between 5 and 20 1m^2 quadrats, number of quadrats depending on the nature of the site and survey practicability. For woodland and other sites, full species lists were taken, and species frequency was estimated on the DAFOR scale for significant species. Due to the limited time scale of the project, it was necessary to assess some sites outside of the normal surveying season, for these full species lists were taken, however it is accnowledged that these are by no means a complete record of the species present on those sites.
