Bird species occurrences recorded from selected sites in mid Tana River Basin, Kenya

Study Extent

The following sites were sampled during the field trip. Tana River county: Jamhuri (Galore), Danabole-Wayu ward, Daba woodlands, Wayu (Galore), Halo-Hirimani (Bura), Walsorea-Hirimani, Walestokocha, Bura-Galore-Bura, Wenje, North Bilbil, South Madogo, West Madogo and Bangale. Garissa county: Bula-Rahma(Korakora), Bula-nadir(Korakora) and Sankuri.

Sampling

We used Kenya Bird Map atlassing protocol (http://kenyabirdmap.adu.org.za/) to record bird species in every site visited. A smartphone application BirdLasser was used to capture all the observations as either seen or heard. Different habitats types were identified within a pentad (9x9square kilometer) using SW maps (a smartphone GIS mapping application). Observers spent at least 2 hours in each pentad covering diverse habitats as possible. Due to logistical reasons, it was not always possible to spend this amount of time in the pentads visited.

Quality Control

Species identification was done on site by a team of bird experts from the Ornithology Section, National Museums of Kenya.
