The point set contains data on the distribution of Cypripedium guttatum Sw. (Orchidaceae) in the Komi Republic. C. guttatum is the most widely distributed slipper orchid and the only species present in both the Old and the New World. It ranges from easternmost Europe (Urals) across Siberia to Sakhalin, north-east China, Korea, Japan, and on to north-west America; it is also present in India, Nepal, Bhutan and south-west China (Sichuan, Tibet and Yunnan) (Cox et al., 1997; Cribb, 1997). The Komi Republic presents its north-western distribution limit. This calciphilous plant grows in coniferous and mixed forests, often in boggy forests, in lowland and transitory bogs, on forested rocks and slide lime rocks (Teteryuk, Kirillova, 2011). Flowering is in June. Fruiting is in July-August. The species is characterized by vegetative and seed reproduction. Pollinators of C. guttatum in the Komi Republic are bees – Lasioglossum calceatum and L. brevicorne (Kirillova et al., 2017). Cypripedium guttatum is a perennial summer-green herbaceous plant. The rhizome is long, branching, up to 0.3 cm in diameter. Its annual increase is up to 7 cm in swamps and 2 cm in rocks (Teteryuk, Kirillova, 2011). Aboveground shoots are 10–30 cm long with two elliptical or ovate- elliptical leaves, 7–10 cm long and 4–5 cm wide. The number of flowers is one. The flowers are white-colored, with large violet-pink confluent spots. Labellum is shoe-shaped, about 2 cm long. The upper segment of the outer perianth whorl is ovate, acuminate, 2–3 cm in length, with violet-pink spots. The two side segments of the inner perianth are about 2 cm long, elongated, white, bare, with big violet-pink spots. The point set was prepared with data obtained as a result of field studies of the authors, data published in scientific literature and acquired from vascular plant collection of SYKO herbaria. The research was supported by Project N 18-4-4-23 (АААА-А17-117121270031-2) of Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences Complex Programme "Genetic diversity of rare species at the Northeast European Russia: inventorying and forecast of their stability under the climate changes"
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The study was carried in whole territory of the Komi Republic. The occurrence data were collected from an area of approximately 416.8 thousand square km. The point set was prepared with data obtained as a result of field studies of the authors, data published in scientific literature and acquired from vascular plant collection of SYKO herbaria.Sampling
For each of the specimen location, topography, geo-referenced was made.Quality Control
Data has been collected and identified by botanists from the Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.Method steps
- The data of long-term field studies of the authors conducted in the Republic of Komi, including in specially protected natural areas, were summarized on the MS Excel sheet. When carrying out field work, a route method was used to survey the sites typical for the growth of C. guttatum. For all identified locations of the species, geographical coordinates were recorded using Garmin CSX 60 GPS receiver (WGS 84), the number of plants, the area of distribution were estimated, and a brief description of phytocenotic parameters were fixed. The herbarium label data were taken from vascular plants collection of the Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Herbarium (SYKO). The every occurrence record where merged into one MS Excel sheet. In the database record the following parameters: collector, identifier, date of record, locality description, site charasteristic. Georeferencing was performed according to the method described in the publication "Guide to best practices for georeferencing" (Chapman, Wieczorek, 2006). Georeference of occurrence record where made with the help of available topomaps to the territory of the Komi Republic. For rough reference used maps with a scale of 1: 200000. More accurate binding was carried out according to the satellite images presented on a publicly accessible Internet resources (https://wego.here.com; https://yandex.ru/maps, etc.). C. guttatum is classed as high sensitivity species via categories of sensitivity provided by A.D. Chapman and O. Grafton (2008). Therefore, the data presented were denatured to 0.01 degrees (≈1 km). Data may bу supplied at finer scales on request to Authors under the conditions of a Data License. The species name were given according to “The Plant list” (http://www.theplantlist.org).
